Conquering the Sea by John Marlon Molinos
GVCFI is a fast growing institution known here in the SOCSKSARGEN Region. We all know that it offers a two year program and a Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel and Restaurant management. The Toque Republic (HRM Dept.) of GVCFI joins TUNA FESTIVAL in General Santos City last September 3, 2009. It is a great exposure to GVCFI in joining such event.
This resembles that GVCFI in not only setting their goals limited to Koronadal, it also wants to deliver the message to the whole Mindanao that we can make things happen. The HRM department joins the table setting competition that was conducted by the GOLDEN STATE COLLEGE at KCC GENSAN. It is a first time of GVCFI to join outside its hometown but is doesn’t stop there. The competition proper started during the ingress session at KCC. There are 5 schools who joined in this event, there are two schools from Koronadal and we’re one of those, one in Digos and two in Davao.
We we’re only given Three (3) hours to set everything up. Each participating team has their own concept on how they celebrate the “GREAT TUNA FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE”. Our school’s theme for this event is “THE WEATH OF THE SEA”. Each school has three (3) representatives who will be the one that will assemble everything. Our school’s representatives are the best in Table Setting they are Liezel Juares, Sherwin Jay Faisal Hapitan, and John Marlon Molinos. The orientation started at 5 in the morning of September 3 and the set-up started at 6:00 am and everything should be finished before 9 in the morning for the opening of the store. At first the participant can’t feel any pressure but as the time goes by, the tension become intimate. Each of the participants are rattling and wondering what to do and what to add next.
It is a good thing that our participant know what supposed to do next and the sequence of setting it up. We nearly set everything up aside from the projector, and there was a little time to set it up. We feel very intense when we heard that there are only 10 minutes left and the projector is not working. That is why we trace everything and identify what went wrong. And up to the last moment, we have finally made the projector working and it’s about time. We feel relief when we already finished it, we thought that it is over but it’s just starting. We have not yet much time to fix our selves, all we did is a little bit of this and that. Then the judges arrive, they all came from manila and they are very professional in their own field.
They threw questions and those are supposedly be needing an answer. It’s a good thing that we are knowledgeable enough to answer those kinds of question. After that they are not yet satisfied of questioning those undying questionnaires to all of the participants. They acted as a guest and they see to it that we all know how to accommodate and how to use those utensils accordingly. When they are finally finished judging, they went to a corner to talk and debrief everyone. And aside from table setting competition for the college level, there are also events in culinary for the high school level. So, while waiting for the results, all the participating schools roam around the convention center to watch different kinds of activities. When the organizer of the said event placed the ribbons on the winners of the table setting, we we’re hesitating to watch if we have won the gold or not, but when she was gone, we immediately stand where we are sitting and see what is the result. Then we we’re screaming our hearts out when we have seen the gold ribbing with the words written on it “1st place” at last, all of the sleepless night of our instructors and the lifting of heavy supplies has been rewarded a much bigger prize.
You will notice that the school is very supportive. When they heard the news, they immediately closed the office and drive to General Santos City to congratulate each of us. And we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Mrs. Luz Sustiguer who paid for the dinner of all us. And to our instructors, moderators, coaches Ms. Graziel Doronila, Larry Sebua, Devee Grace Benavidez, Helen Carbon, Abigail may Garcia and also to Ms. Mildred Liboon who is also there and to the students who are there supporting us Thank You Very Much.
Keep it up Greenvallians! Angat Ka!
